Academic WorldQuest is a Flagship Program of the World Affairs Council network. It is a team game testing competitors' knowledge of international affairs, geography, history and culture.
Locally, 25 students, teachers, parents and Council supporters attended the 2016 Admiral Jonathan T. Howe Academic WorldQuest on November 10. A record number of competitors, 51 teams from 23 local high schools, made for a particularly spirited program.
First place went to the team “Who’s your Baghdadi?” from Stanton College Preparatory School (32 out of 36 points). The team and faculty advisor Frank Bunton will be traveling to Washington, D.C. in April 2017 to represent Northeast Florida at the national competition.
·Second place was tied between “The Democratic Republic of Ridgeview” from Ridgeview High School and “Live Fast Die Jong” from Stanton College Preparatory School. (30 out of 36 points)
·Third place went to “Class of ’17 Trillion” from Fernandina Beach High School. (28 out of 36 points)
·The Best Team Name was awarded to the team “World Peace, Are U.N.?” from Hilliard Middle-Senior High School
The amount of excitement and ambition amongst the students could be felt throughout the evening. Afterwards, students commented on how much fun they had collaborating with their peers. They also noted that while they were proud of the knowledge they had acquired about the world, they planned on following current events more closely moving forward (and in preparation for next year’s competition.)
